Physics student Serena Davis on exchange in Hong Kong

10 Jun 2025

Why did you choose your host country and host university, The Chinese University of Hong Kong?
I wanted to go somewhere where the main language spoken wasn't English so that I could study and be immersed in a new language while I was abroad. Hong Kong was ideal, because I could communicate and take courses in English while also learning Cantonese!

What was your favourite experience while on exchange?
One of my favourite experiences was attending the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance! I was able to attend a cultural workshop beforehand, so I got to learn a lot about the history of the event and its significance in the community, and the dance itself was incredible!

What was something surprising or different that you experienced while on exchange?
Everything seemed a lot faster paced than I was used to, which was a little difficult to get used to at first. I was also pleasantly surprised at just how easy it was to get places — I could be anywhere I wanted to be in quite a short amount of time!

Words of advice to a student consider an exchange.
I definitely recommend that you go! It might be difficult at first, but it's a really amazing experience! :) I’m so glad I was able to participate in the exchange program and I would encourage every MtA student to take part in it.
